Contemporary dance is a style of expressive that combines elements of several dance genres including ballet, jazz, hip hop and lyrical. In class, we focus on the technical elements followed by a creative task involving choreography or improvisation. Contemporary evolves to remain contemporary to the time, it is very open-minded and accessible to an individual's natural form. Contemporary is a creative outlet that balances freedom of movement with instruction, rules and discipline. There are several prominent features within the style some of which are, tilts, contractions, high release, fall and roll.
Senior dancers create movement on a larger scale, longer dances and in bigger groups, they learn teamwork and have patience with each other. Contemporary is connected to other art forms, such as art, theatre and particularly music. Dancers are often encouraged to research these different forms in relation to their dance idea. Senior dancers are pushed out of their comfort zones, mastering large leaps, off-balance tilts as well as intricate floorwork.
They are taught to feel the music, use the breath but most importantly make in their own.
